Men’s Soccer Rounding out the Season with Final Conference Games

By Myla Stewart

MACOMB, IL-  Tuesday Oct. 18 the Leathernecks battled the Detroit Titans in their final non-conference matchup. John Mackenzie Alumni Field hosted the 90 minute thriller that resulted in yet another draw for our Neck’s.

Western was first on the scoreboard this game with Muazu Sagir scoring his third goal of the season. Sagir has become an extremely important player for WIU this year, as he is currently leading the team in goals and assists. Oscar Olingdahl gathered the ball in mid-field and looked to Sagir to finalize the attack. Sagir managed to get around the defender and finish the shot past the Titans keeper. Western Illinois would hold onto this lead through the first half and start the second half with a score of 1-0. About 20 minutes into the second half Detroit found their opening off of a scrappy corner kick. That goal would be the equalizer and the final goal scored in that game. Finishing the match in another draw, the Neck’s moved to 1-6-6 overall with four more games left in the season.

This Saturday Western travels to Minnesota to take on St. Thomas in a Summit League matchup. St. Thomas is 2-8-2 overall with a record of 1-1-1 in conference. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 P.M. in St. Paul. Muazu Sagir has played a big role in the Leathernecks attack in their most recent games, let’s hope they can continue into the final games of the season with this momentum.
