MACOMB, Ill. (NEWS3) — The oldest known living survivor of the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II and lifetime Macomb resident, John Moon died Oct. 29.
According to his obituary from Dodsworth-Piper-Wallen Funeral Home, he was born April 3, 1916 in Macomb. After graduating from Macomb High School in 1934, went on to receive his Bachelor of Science Degree from Western Illinois University.
At 27-years-old, Moon enlisted in the United States Marine Corp. after being inspired by his football coach at WIU, ‘Rock’ Hanson. After completing training and boot camp, he deployed to Iwo Jima.
Moon’s obituary states he landed on the beach on D-Day where he fought and was wounded. He was awarded the Purple Heart for his bravery and was discharged on Sept. 25, 1945.
In addition to his service to his country, Moon was active in the community. He owned two restaurants in Macomb, the S&J Cafe and Andies Candies Restaurant. Moon also was a carpenter, school bus driver and sold life insurance. He also taught driver education at Macomb High School for 10 years.
Moon was involved in many community organizations and served as an alderman for Macomb City Council for a couple terms.
A visitation will be held Wednesday, Nov. 6 from 4-7 p.m. at the Dodsworth-Piper-Wallen Funeral Home. A celebration of life memorial service will be held Thursday, Nov. 7 at 10 a.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church.
