MACOMB, Illinois (NEWS3) — The Macomb Police Department will have to find a new long-term candidate as Chief Jerel Jones moves on to another police department

Jones will be moving on to Flossmoor, Illinois. Jones has served the city of Macomb since March 2021, and has been very grateful for his time at the department.

“I would not have been successful as a chief without the support of the men and women in the department, and definitely the community,” Jones said.

Jones was a Western Illinois University graduate from the university’s law enforcement department and served as a detective for the Office of Public Safety during his time as a WIU employee.

Macomb Mayor Michael J. Inman has appointed Macomb Police Department Operations Commander Jaff Hamer to take over as the Chief of Police in Macomb until a new police chief is hired.

“I have all of the confidence in the world in him (Hamer) until we find a permanent replacement for Chief Jones,” Inman said.

There is no timetable to when a new permanent Chief of Police will be appointed.
