MACOMB, IL- Another loss is added to the Leathernecks season record. After a tough performance against previous opponent, Green Bay, Western Illinois men’s soccer now stands at 0-6-4 on the season.

The lineup for this game looked a little different than previous games for the Necks. Featuring three first time starters Jaylen Drummond, Gabe Chapa, and Paul Nerb each got their first starts of the 2022 season. Entering halftime with a score of 0-0 there was time for both teams to finish some chances in the second half. Junior Muazu Sagir brought energy off the bench and was able to tie the game up 1-1 in the 69th minute. With a third time rebounded clearance back to Damian Rincon’s feet, he was able to chip in a ball just past the Panther’s keeper where Sagir would finish it first time. This is his second goal of the season, and the first goal the Leathernecks have scored in three games. Defender Tajh Hylton saw the most minutes of his season, totalling 63 for the match against Green Bay. Green Bay was able to capitalize on the opportunities they were given, final score was 2-1 in favor of the Phoenix.

Looking to next Saturday Oct. 8 the Leathernecks are traveling to Charleston, IL for their second Summit League matchup against Eastern Illinois University (1-6-1). The EIU Panther’s are currently 0-2 in conference play and have one more match before taking on Western. Maintaining a result on the road is going to be extremely important for the Leathernecks if they want a shot at the conference tournament this year. Freshman defender Marco Presta will be eligible to make his return to the starting lineup as his previous red card postponed him from playing in the Green Bay match.

The Eastern Western rivalry is one that will play a big role for either team when it comes down to conference rankings. Gaining a result could possibly give both teams the push they need to compete for the Summit League title this fall. The Leathernecks are headed east for a kickoff scheduled at 11 A.M. Saturday Oct. 8 on Lakeside Field at EIU.
