MACOMB, Illinois – A small town surrounded by cornfields is a big change from a city. With that change current and incoming students at Western Illinois University in Macomb may wonder what there is to do for fun here. It may be in a student’s best interest to try to find a group or a club at WIU.

“Here with-in our office a big thing is getting students involved with a student organization,” Nick Katz, director of on-campus student activities, said “We have over 200-campus organizations to choose from.”

The website housing all of the campus organizations has many different ways to categorize the groups. The WIU University Union Board, works to bring performances and activities to campus.

“They will bring in comedians, hypnotists and character artists, we will have paintball, things like inflatables, speakers, and you name it. We have done multiple concerts on campus,” Katz said. “I think the more you get involved the more you’re going to enjoy your experience here at Western.”

Macomb is located near Spring lake, Lake Argyle and Little Swan Lake. Each “lake” has canoes, kayaks, and paddle boards to rent in the warmer months, as well as year-round fishing, according to macombspringlake.com.

For a dryer activity, there are three varieties of golf offered in Macomb, including 18-hole golf courses, disc golf goals placed all-throughout the WIU campus and Glenwood Park, and mini golf at Ball Fore Family Entertainment Center, 9575 US Hwy 136, Macomb, IL 61455.

After five o’clock head over to the local brewery to try multiple local craft beers, at Forgottonia Brewing, 324 N. Lafayette St. Across the street from Forgottonia is the local bowling alley, Digger’s College City Bowl, at 123 E Adams. Macomb has multiple college bars so the night life goes until 2 a.m. when the bars all close.
