MACOMB, Illinois — Western Illinois University Women’s Center will host their annual Vagina Monologues.
The Vagina Monologues is based on activist Eve Ensler’s play. Ensler focuses the play on stigmas about women’s sexuality.
Graduate assistant Aleezah Washington said this event is to embody body positivity and to rid the stigma from the word “vagina.”
This year, due to COVID-19, the WIU Women’s Center had to figure out a different way to hold this public event. They decided to host a three-day event with activities that relate to The Vagina Monologues.
“It’s important to me because, one, I am a woman and accepting what your body is and what you make of it,” graduate assistant Trameka Pope said. “You’re not comparing yourself to how your body should look and it’s your body it’s what you make of it for what it is.”
The activities are interactive and allow participants to learn more. The first event is a sticker swag from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 22. This event will have the attendees talk about what The Vagina Monologues means with stickers and a trivia contest.
The second event is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 23 with the screening of a short documentary film about “The Vagina Monologues,” play by Eve Ensler. That will be followed by a discussion.
The last event will take place 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 24. The attendees will be painting glasses with images related to The Vagina Monologues.
All the events will be in the multipurpose room of the Multicultural Center.
