Bushnell native Emiliano Vera running for state rep.

(NEWS3) — Democrat Emiliano Vera is hoping to challenge incumbent Norine Hammond for the seat of Illinois state representative of the 93rd district.

According to his website, the 26-year-old Bushnell native is the first openly gay candidate for state representative in downstate Illinois. Vera stated on his website he hopes to “build an Illinois that works for all of our working families.”

Vera said his platform focuses on opposing violence and “seeking justice for women, people of color and queer people.” Vera also lists issues on his website he hopes to combat, which includes education, healthcare, fair tax, workers’ rights and the environment.

Vera is set to face democratic challenger Scott Stoll in the March 2020 primary election.

Vera announced his campaign in June. He recently celebrated his six month anniversary of his campaign launch.
