70-year-old man dead after Macomb apartment fire

MACOMB (NEWS3) — Macomb Fire Department released the name of the man who died early Saturday morning in an apartment fire.

Macomb Fire Chief JR Hyde said 70-year-old William Harris died on scene after being rescued from his living room.

Hyde said firefighters responded to 119 N Campbell St. just after 4:30 a.m. Saturday after a passerby noticed smoke coming from the west windows of the apartment.

After firefighters arrived, they found Harris on the second floor of the building. Hyde said Harris was given medical treatment but later died on the scene.

Once inside the apartment, Hyde said the living room couch was engulfed with flames.

Harris was the only occupant in the building. Hyde said he lived in the apartment for nearly three years.

The Illinois State Fire Marshall said the cause of the fire is undetermined.  Harris’ autopsy is scheduled for Monday.

Hyde said there were fire alarms inside the apartment.

This is the first death related to a structure fire this year in Macomb.

The first floor of the building is the office of Lotz Property Management.
