MACOMB, Ill. (NEWS3) — The Western Illinois men’s soccer team secured their first win of the season with a 4-3 victory over the Denver Pioneers.
The Leathernecks (1-11-0) (1-1-0 Summit League) scored the game winner in the 75th minute, when freshman defender Kyle Owen headed in a corner kick by junior Paul Kirdorf.
The Pioneers (2-7-2) (0-1-1) scored just past the five-minute mark on a goal by junior forward Preston Judd.
The Leathernecks responded with two quick scores in the 16th and 19th minute by junior midfielder Daisuke Otsuka and sophomore forward Cesar Cosio.
Denver tied the game before half when junior forward Josh Drack fired a shot into the back of the net in the 35th minute.
WIU and the Pioneers traded goals halfway through the second half. Junior forward Ryan Debois scored in the 65th minute for the Leathernecks, and Denver freshman midfielder Kengo Ohira scored four minutes later.
The Leathernecks continue their homestand Tuesday against the Detroit Mercy Titans at John MacKenzie Alumni Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
