Leathernecks secure victory on lone goal from Andrews

GALESBURG, Ill. (NEWS3) — The Western Illinois women’s soccer team ended non-conference play on Sunday with a 1-0 victory over Chicago State University.

The Leathernecks’ (4-5-1) lone goal came in the 58 minute when Amy Andrews received a pass from Cassidy Grunewald, and buried the shot into the back of the net.

This was Andrews’ team-leading fifth goal this season, and Grunewald’s third assist which also leads the team.

The Panthers (0-11-0) recorded 7 shots throughout the course of the game, only 3 were on goal and all were saved by Ines Palmiero Herrera.

This marks Herreras fifth shutout, tying her for fifth all-time in program history.

The Leathernecks will host the Omaha University Mavericks to begin Summit League play on Thursday at John MacKenzie Field at 3 p.m.
