MACOMB, Ill. (NEWS3) — The Western Illinois football team on Saturday lost 38-24 to the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles in a game that was delayed by severe weather.
WIU quarterback Kevin Johnson made his Leatherneck debut after starter Connor Sampson left the game with an injury in the first half. Johnson went 10-for-14 for 159 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions.
The Golden Eagles offense was running on all cylinders on Saturday, scoring touchdowns on all four trips into the red zone and racking up 549 yards.
TTU quarterback Bailey Fisher had a career day at Hanson Field, going 23-for-37 for 314 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Fisher also rushed for 90 yards and three more scores.
WIU (0-4) trailed 31-10 in the fourth quarter, but trimmed its deficit to seven.
Johnson led the Leathernecks on a nine-play, 74-yard drive that ended in a 18-yard passing touchdown to George Wahee.
Linebacker Andre Whitley intercepted Fisher on the ensuing drive to set the Leathernecks up at the TTU 31-yard line.
On the next play, Johnson found wide receiver Dennis Houston for an 18-yard touchdown.
Tennessee Tech answered with a score on its next possession with a 26-yard rushing touchdown by Fisher to cap the scoring.
WIU will return to Hanson Field on Oct. 5 against Missouri State. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
