Second-half surge propels Roos past Leathernecks

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (NEWS3) — Western Illinois women’s soccer started off strong against the University of Missouri-Kansas City on Sunday, but fell 3-1.

WIU (1-1-1) took an early lead with a goal from Carolina Gomes in the 18th minute.

UMKC’s Rylan Childers tied the game at 1 after she converted a penalty kick in the 53rd minute. The Roos (4-0-0) took the lead for good on a 65th-minute goal by Lindsey Prokop. Childers converted another penalty kick for the match’s final tally.

Western goalkeeper Ines Palmiero Herrera made five saves to give her 190 for her career.

WIU will host home the University of Illinois-Chicago on Thursday at 4 p.m
