Late goal lifts Panthers over Leathernecks in season opener

MILWAUKEE, Wis. (NEWS3) — The Western Illinois men’s soccer team opened its season with a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers on Friday.

The Leathernecks matched each of the Panthers’ first two tallies with goals by Daisuke Otsuka (5′) and Paul Kirdorf (68′).

WIU goalkeeper Tim Trilk made six saves, including a key stop on a penalty kick late in the game to keep the match tied at 2.

Milwaukee eventually scored the go-ahead goal in the 84th minute off a corner kick that Jake Keiderman headed in.

WIU will travel to the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay on Sunday. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.
