WIU volleyball hits the road

MACOMB, IL (NEWS3) — The Western Illinois Volleyball team is headed on a long bus trip to the state of Mississippi this weekend for the Starkvegas Classic.

WIU will take on Mississippi Valley State Friday afternoon at 2:30 and then play Chattanooga at 5pm. The women will return to the court Saturday to play tournament host Mississippi State at 2pm.

“Friday is going to be very rough playing back to back games but I think the kids are game,” Head coach Ben Staupe said. “Our student athletes are focused, they are ready to go and they know what we are getting into. We are excited for the challenge.”

Sophomore middle blocker Madeline Dieter echoed her coaches thoughts.

“Mississippi State is obviously a big school and we are super pumped to play them,” Dieter said. “Honestly we want to be able to take a couple sets from them and we want to prove to them we are a different team than the year before.”

Sophomore right side hitter Mariah Mitchell also shares her coach’s high expectations for the team this season.

“I want us to score more efficiently, have more blocks, less errors and do things that will help us win,” Mitchell said.

Whatever sport it is being on the same page is not a bad thing in the slightest, the WIU Volleyball team is passionate, Hungry, and ready to start the regular season 600 miles from home.
