One injured after rollover accident in Monmouth

MONMOUTH, Illinois (NEWS3) – One person was injured after a rollover accident in Monmouth Tuesday.

According to the Illinois State Police, 44-year-old John Whitaker of Dallas City, Illinois was driving a Kenworth box truck.

Whitaker made a right turn from the U.S. 34 eastbound to the U.S. 67 northbound on-ramp when the truck rolled on the driver’s side.

The vehicle was a company truck from J & M Displays, a fireworks and flame effects company from Yarmouth, Iowa.

The truck was carrying 17,000 pounds of class 1.3 hazardous materials, but none was released and remained inside the vehicle.

According to the Hazardous Materials Fusion Center, class 1.3 hazardous materials are “explosives which have a fire hazard and either a minor blast hazard or a minor projection hazard or both, but not a mass explosion hazard.”

Whitaker was taken to the hospital where he was treated and released with minor injuries.
