SPRINGFIELD, Illinois – The minimum age to buy tobacco products could increase in Illinois.
Healthcare Weekly reported that the bill known as “Tobacco 21” was approved by the senate Public Health Committee in an 8-4 vote.
Previously vetoed by former Gov. Bruce Rauner, the bill would raise the age from 18 to 21 to purchase tobacco in Illinois. It is expected for Gov. J.B. Pritzker to sign the bill into law.
Tobacco 21 would restrict people under the age of 21 from buying all tobacco products, such as cigarettes, e-cigarettes and chewing tobacco. The bill would also amend the Prevention of Tobacco Products Act.
Healthcare Weekly says the American Lung Association supports Tobacco 21 because most adult smokers begin the habit before the age of 21.
