Copy of Galesburg city government number used in scam

GALESBURG, Illinois (NEWS3) — The Galesburg Police Department is warning residents of a scam coming from a copy of a city government number.

Residents have reported receiving scam phone calls from 309-343-9151, the number for the Galesburg Public Safety Building.

Police say scammers are spoofing the number and calls are not originating from the public safety building.

“Recipients of the calls have reported the caller has requested money, in some cases indicating a family member is in trouble,” a social media post from the Galesburg Police Department reads.

If the phone call does not seem legitimate, hang up and call Galesburg Public Safety back at 309-343-9151.

Police remind residents not to send the caller money or share any personal information with the caller.
