California man coughs up blood clot shaped like lung passage, later dies of heart failure

SAN FRANCISCO, California (NEWS3) – A 36-year-old man, who later died from heart failure, coughed up a blood clot shaped like his right lung’s bronchial tree.

According to a Nov. 29 article in the New England Journal of Medicine, an unidentified male was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit at the University of California San Francisco Medical Center.

The man had a severe cough the week of his hospitalization that included coughing up blood and phlegm.

“During an extreme bout of coughing, the patient spontaneously expectorated an intact cast of the right bronchial tree. The right bronchial tree consists of three segmental branches in the upper lobe, two segmental branches in the middle lobe, and five segmental branches in the lower lobe,” the authors of the journal wrote.

The patient reportedly had no further symptoms of his cough after the incident. He later died of heart failure after a history heart problems, including being fitted for a pacemaker.
