101-year-old WWII veteran John Moon sings National Anthem inside Western Hall

MACOMB,Ill.- In honor of Military Appreciation Night at the Western Illinois women’s basketball game on Wednesday night, Jan. 25 there wasn’t an ordinary National Anthem singer.

101-year-old World War II veteran and Western Illinois alumnus John Moon is the oldest known living survivor of the Battle of Iwo Jima.

Moon graduated from Western in 1939 where he played football and basketball. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor at the age of 25, Moon enlisted.

He also can belt out the National Anthem and did so in front of over 500 dazzled fans on Wednesday night.

The Leatherneck women’s basketball team lost the game to IUPUI 76-72.
