Today’s heavy rainfall pushed back the pouring of the driving surface on the new Wigwam Hollow Road bridge to next week.

The 200 foot long surface of the new bridge will be able to support more weight than the old, 8-ton-limit bridge that was decommissioned earlier this year. According to Eric Moe, project manager of the Wigwam Hollow Bridge project with McClure Engineering in Macomb, the old structure was experiencing the signs of age, including exposed supports, chipping of the surface, and the beginnings of rust.

The new bridge is more than double the spanned length of the old structure, and will include a walkway to join new sidewalks along Wigwam Hollow Road. Upon the completion of the bridge structure, landscaping work will begin.

The project is largely funded by federal grants under a major bridge funding bill that assists municipalities in bridge-building projects that total in excess of $1,000,000. According to Moe, the project is expected to total roughly $2,000,000. The grant covers around 90% of the funds of this project. Officials say they hope to have the project finished by mid-November.
